Evaluation

During this project I found out much about myself and my art work. By setting my own brief to stick to I was able to explore the aspects I enjoy. I wanted to push myself during this brief and experience different aspects of my work. I normal work with a lot of neon colours and materials because I find that they make my art work more of an statement. However I did find new ways in the project that benefited my work, which was by cutting out all the neon and focusing more on the techniques and processes. This benefited my work because I could focus more on how I could manipulate my materials. Also by cutting out the neon I knew I could always add it in later to create the statements I wanted instead of always using the neon and having them cancelled each other out.
Another technique I found that helped my work was thinking more about materials research. I found out that I like cheap materials which are easy to manipulate. With the materials I need lots of them because I have found I work better with more of them and using repetition like with the omni stitch it created the same processes over and over again which gave an impact. Material research has a massive impact on my work because my work revolves around materials and manipulating them. I find it exciting when I find new materials within my work because I always find it intriguing when I know I can change the way they look.
I also benefited from making mistakes during this brief I make a lot of mistakes because I couldn’t grasp how to get the organic and natural look. However by making these mistakes I found new ways of overcoming them and I will take these experiences further in my work.
During this project I found out where I could see my art work in the future. By doing the research and looking more into what I enjoy creating I found window displays which were these statement piece which I thought linked to my work. The impact my work gives of in this project is what I linked it to in my research because they window displays had these materials and they were all just manipulating them in different ways and that what I was doing within this brief.
With all these different techniques I have found that benefit my work I will be taking further because they all help me understand my art work better.  I have more of a passion and goal to achieve now in my future work. I know what I want to work towards which is creating these impact statement pieces which can be used within the interiors and window displays.
Over all within the project I have made some bad mistakes which I have overcome and can take forward within my work because I have changed them so that they help me more. People find mistakes are bad however I find them helpful within my practice because sometimes they make accidences happen and these are normally sometimes better than the work you have planned out. Most of my work in accidences and I have found ways of working with them to create impact pieces. Next times I will be working towards creating much larger scale samples which will engage neon colours and linear lines because these I have found I work better with and I won’t to take it further and explore this in much more depth.

Repeating Lines

With this technique of repeating lines I wanted to change it more because I wanted to make them on a larger scale with different fabrics. The lines which I thought captured the most fluidity was where I carried on the lines without the fabric behind because they had more freedom to move and they weren’t restricted on to the fabric. Also I started to add the neon colours back in to my work only ever so slight because I wanted the colour to standout and not over take each other. My adding the single line of neon make the work totally different because it make you think about what is it? This is what I want to do, I wanted to create pieces which made a statement.
I knew that I wanted to create these surfaces for an installation or interiors purpose that why I started to manipulate the lines in ways I could see them being. It was almost like I was building and changing the way we see interiors. I started manipulating them on to the window because I was looking in to window designs and how they can change the way you look at something. With building them into the window I found that worked best because I could capture the light coming through the lines and the fabric I used was showing through. This changed the whole look about the piece and I was able to change the organic feel to how I wanted it with the fluidity of lines. Another piece which worked really well in the window was the piece with the neon colours as the background fabric because it was a satin ribbon so it was quite see through if you placed near the light so by having against the window the light came through quite clear however by having the lines white you just got that chemise of neon through and this is what I wanted to capture from the start so that the neon colours weren’t over powering each other and made this huge statement. However I did change the aspects of the lines and places them in different places such as on the floor and against a black background these didn’t work as well as the window because it was too harsh against the lines and they just seemed to be to flat and by having them on the window they could see the whole piece as a surface. I also manipulated one piece in to a sculpture form which did work well but if I did wanted to create more a sculpture form I would need lots more of the lines because the way it created its forms it was small and I wanted to have these statement pieces so I would need to create much bigger lines to achieve this effect for the sculptures aspects.

Omni Stitch

I found working with white materials help me a lot in knowing what processes worked well and what materials are beneficial towards my work. With working in this way I was also introduced on to the omni machine which was engaging because of the effect the machines constructed. With the machines I found that it manipulates lines and gathers it all together to create these repeated forms. I thought this technique was very intriguing and I wanted to see how far I could push my limits in to create something at a bigger scale because the samples I was shown were little. I wanted to create statement pieces with this machine. I manipulated all this white ribbon one a much larger scale. I covered all the fabric so you couldn’t see anything but the lines that the ribbon created. With this the fabric started to form in different ways because of the way I stitched the fabric it was starting to curve around itself and create a form so this generated more ideas and I was so involved in how I could change the lines and fabric to create more unique forms. I also found that by doing this technique it helped me achieve this organic and natural effect because by creating lines and fabric on a much grander scale it was clearer to see how I could manipulate these after to get the drippy effect.

Proportions

With having more problems with the colours and getting the right proportion of neon so I took a break away from the colours and focused more towards the processes and materials and bought every material that I was going to use in white. The materials I look more into were all linear and lines I was trying to develop my own type of thread to manipulate because I found within my work I change the way people traditional use threads. I make my own threads from everyday materials such as baths matts, electrical cording, window seal and installation tape. With these materials I changed the way we looked at them and created these 3d refiles from the wall which gave them a different effect in some cases they looked like part of the wall and the different textures in the bath matt gave another effect. On the other hand I need to consider how I manipulate them as some of the samples I created changed their shape and started to look like objects instead of having and linear statement to them. I also found that I work better with multiples and repetition as I find that having more of the materials creates more of an impact and within my artwork this is one of my main points.

Window Displays

What I have been looking into is where I could see my art work in the future and what appears to me the most is mass window displays with all there fast changing outcomes and statement pieces which change the way you look at objects and materials. What impacts me the most about the displays is that they draw you towards the shop and make you wonder what the installation is made from? They aren’t permanent, they are always changing to something more different and that’s what I enjoy create and working towards is semi permanent statements which could be used for installations and interiors uses.

More Development

I took my material research and went and bought cheap neon materials such as children gloop, cable ties, fishing line and much more liner materials. I also focused on different types of processes I could use such as the tailor tacklering foot on the cable ties which looked quite effected as the neon colour was broken up by using the white. That’s when I started to use white and black materials to try and make the neon colours brighter. I was struggling to make the neon colours a statement because they kept cancelling out each other. By bringing in the white and black make the colours stronger however the black was to strong and it made you look at that more than the neon colours. I need to find a balance between the neon colours because they don’t seem to work together. I need them to bring a statement and impact to my work. I need flashes of the neon against the white.

Martha Friedman is one of the artist that really inspired me to look more in to linear work and work more with creating my own thread. In her sculptures Brooklyn-based artist Martha Friedman depicts tricks and balancing acts, while arguing for the possible sexual connotation in everything. Referencing the history of art, from high modernist abstraction to minimalism to the Duchampian ready-made, Friedman is interested in locating the point at which common objects slip into abstraction and, even more so, eroticism. As a result, food, which is so deeply connected to the body, emerges as one of her subjects, as do quotidian objects like rubber bands and eggs in conglomerations that are beautiful, witty, and often set up visual and verbal double-entendres.

William Kendrick is different from Martha Friedman because is he a painter. What inspired me about his paintings were the drippy lines he created and how he caught the organic feel about them. Kendrick credits his birthplace, Blackpool, with his love of colour and light, acknowledging the influence of the casinos, amusements and neon illuminations of Blackpool’s Golden Mile on what he describes as his sometimes “seemingly overindulgent aesthetics”. In fact they are nothing as the sort, as there is a restraint to his gaudy colour, holding the balance in check at exactly the right moment, so what you get is work that takes you to the edge of sensory overload, and keeps you there, asking for more. What the artist says: “I place myself in the role of a digital time travelling archaeologist. From the ridiculous to the incredible; these works ask questions of the weight and hierarchical values we impose on pursuits, and whether they are all equally as futile or pragmatic as each other, in terms of the collective organism that we call human life.”

Trying to get this fluidly effect in to my work I worked more towards this idea of long drips of fabric. I create rouleaux which did have this effect because of the length and scale however they were still too straight and didn’t have the organic feel to them that I wanted. With the rouleaux I manipulated them in different ways like stuffing them and filling them with liquid but they still didn’t have this natural form to them.
Despite all of this with my materials during the pin up session with my tutors and peers it was suggested to me that I try and show this more jelly, liquid aspect within my materials because these are the aspects that used with in my drawings and photography. This meant that I had to understand and think more carefully about what materials I could use and processes that I could use to manipulate this approach. Also the artist that I am looking at such as Martha Friedman and William Kendrick.

Paris

Over the past few days I visited Paris and seen the MAISON AND OBJECT exhibition. At the exhibition there was a lot of amazing pieces of work. However what caught my eye was the simples yet effect things such as bar stools and sticks. At the exhibition I found it a good experience to go see because of the idea I got about presenting my work and how you use different space and materials to present your work not just white card.

Samples

With the samples I started by manipulating lines and creating reliefs to represent the lines and movement in my paintings and drawings. I used unusual materials such as tinsel, plastic bags

However by doing this I was creating too much of grid and my sample such be more fluid and have more movement within the samples instead of being attached down and restricted with grid. I have to overcome this by using different techniques and processes to push them to create more of a free drippy organic movement. 

With creating more samples I was intrigued more on how I could use the neon colours with in various materials such as straws, waterproof fabric, garden wire, threads and plasters. With the materials I targeted on the lines and liner side of them because I wanted to embrace the drippy effect in the sample. Nonetheless I couldn’t grasp the drippy effect within the samples they were more choppy and straight cut instead of having the fluidity that they needed to be. The samples were disastrous and I had overcome this by developing my processes and techniques more. With my work having this organic drippy effect. I looked more into different painters to see how they place colours together and how they grasp this drippy effect which I need to bring in to my artwork. Also I started to target more on what materials I could use with material research. I benefited from doing this materials research as it gave me more of an open mind towards how I could manipulate the materials. This technique of looking at materials made me look at them a different way because instead of looking at the materials as an object I was looking mainly out what it was made from and how I could change the way we look at it. This is what I want to investigate more towards.

Evaluation

With presenting my ideas to the clients I was shy and scared because I get nervous when I have to talk in front of people that I don’t know. Next time I go up for a commission’s work I need to work on being more confident in myself and my work. My presentation was strong as I had a lot powerful images which made an impact to the audience however I was explain in my presentation I could see my designs as being printed on Perspex. However the clients thought I should physical do my paints and drawings in the building. I presented my images of where I could see my work within the building and they liked and found my idea of having my artwork follow within and out the building interesting. I didn’t have that idea in mind until they asked if the artwork links together and I was surprised and shocked at how much they like and how enthusiastic they were towards my designs prints.
What I gained by doing this presentation was experience of performing in front of clients and how to act formally. This live project gave me different experience in how I could see my work and how the commission side within art works. I enjoyed working on the project because of all these different aspects I gained. In the future I would work more towards improving my presenting skill and speech and being able to answers in much higher quality as I was suturing and repeating myself a lot. The feedback at the end did help me understand where I could improve and benefit from doing more presentation skills because the clients said that my photography is strong and should let some of the images do most of the explaining instead of me describing everything which is on the screen.

BIRLEY FIELDS BUILDING

My ideas for the commission was to create a piece of artwork for an exterior purpose in the new Birley building. When I went on the tour of the building and started looking around I found a space which was on a roof terrace. I knew that I wanted to design my artwork to fit there because I found the site interesting as having art public shocks and inspires me. I found that public art makes an impact on the audience and that’s why I wanted to do for this commission.
I started design different patterns and prints which used a lot of neon colours. However I was painting and design in a different ways to other as I found working with dull colours not exciting and they just looked average. I wanted the audience to be shocked with this impact that’s why I started working with bright bold neon colours which were strong to look at. The materials I was painting with changed the effect of the neon colours. As an artist I use unusual everyday materials you wouldn’t think to use as mark making materials. The materials I used to create my designs were neon paints, water, oil, bubble wrap, mirrors, nail varnishes and jelly. With uses these different materials I was able to manipulate the neon paints in to different patterns and designs. After I had the designs I started manipulating them in to photoshop. By creating different layers on the designs they gave them a strong impact look which I wanted from the start.
